Airsoft Magazines - Unloaded (Explained), Low vs Mid vs High Cap Magazines

When it comes to airsoft magazines, there are three main kinds: low cap, mid cap, and high cap. In this blog post, we will explore the pros and cons of each type of airsoft magazine to help you make an informed decision when choosing the right one for your needs.

Low Cap Magazines

Low cap magazines, also known as low capacity magazines, are airsoft magazines that hold a limited number of BBs. Typically, low cap magazines hold between 20 to 60 BBs.

Pros:

  • Realistic: Low cap magazines offer a more realistic shooting experience because they resemble the magazine capacities of their real firearm counterparts. This is particularly important for airsoft players who want to emulate the feel of using a real firearm.
  • Increased control: With low cap magazines, players have to reload more often, which forces players to be more controlled and accurate.
  • Lightweight: Low cap magazines are typically the lightest magazines, which makes them easier to carry and maneuver.

Cons:

  • Limited BBs: The main disadvantage of low cap magazines is that they hold the least number of BBs, which can be a problem if you find yourself in a heavy firefight. In this scenario, you'll have to reload often, which can slow down your shooting pace and leave you vulnerable to enemy fire.
  • Slower reload time: Low cap magazines take longer to reload than high cap magazines and require speed loaders in most cases.

Mid Cap Magazines

Mid cap magazines, also known as medium capacity magazines, are airsoft magazines that hold a moderate number of BBs and are capable of feeding them all without any winding of the magazine. Typically, mid cap magazines hold between 100 to 200 BBs.

Pros:

  • Good Overall BB Capacity: Mid cap magazines offer a good balance between realism and convenience because they hold a moderate number of BBs. This means that players can enjoy a realistic shooting experience without having to reload as often as they would with low cap magazines.
  • No Winding, all bbs can be fired without and winding by the user
  • Less noise than high-capacity magazines, leading to a stealthier player

Cons:

  • Slower reload time: Similar to Low caps, Mid cap magazines take longer to reload than high cap magazines and require speed loaders in most cases.
  • Limited BBs: Although carrying substantially more than low caps, Mid Cap Magazines still hold less BBs than high caps, requiring you to reload magazines more often and carry more magazines.

High Cap Magazines

High cap magazines, also known as high capacity magazines, are airsoft magazines that hold a large number of BBs. Typically, high cap magazines hold between 200 to 600 BBs and have either a wheel you spin or a string you pull to prime the magazine every so often.

Pros:

  • Increased BBs: High cap magazines offer a convenient shooting experience because they hold a large number of BBs. This means that players can shoot for longer periods of time without having to reload.
  • Simple Reloading: High cap magazines are the simplest to reload, as you typically can just pour ammo straight from your BB container into the top of the magazine.

Cons:

  • Less realistic: High cap magazines offer a less realistic shooting experience because they hold a larger number of BBs than real firearms magazines. This can be a problem for players who want to emulate the feel of using a real firearm.
  • Increased weight: High cap magazines are typically the heaviest of all the magazine types, mainly due to them holding more BBs.
  • Noisy: Due to the reservoir of loose BBs in high cap magazines, they often will rattle when shaken. This noise can often give a player away, removing the element of surprise from a player on the move.
